SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) released the following statement on the new state budget forecast released today:
“Today’s forecast tells us that we in Minnesota have made sound decisions that put us in the best possible position to face the challenges ahead. In this present moment, we have a surplus, a stable economy, and the strongest budget reserve in state history.
Minnesotans elected us to take on challenges, tackle hard conversations, and find creative solutions. We have faced worse economic positions in the past. With strong leadership, and the contributions of hard-working Minnesotans and the economy they create, we have turned potential deficits into surpluses.
But never in our history have we had to do that work up against a President who seems hellbent on ruining the American economy. Only one thing has changed since the November forecast, and that is the election of Donald Trump. In the less than two months since his inauguration, consumer confidence has plummeted, the stock market has tanked, and more than 170,000 Americans have lost their jobs. In Minnesota, his recklessness has shrunk our state surplus by $160 million.
The DFL will continue to stand up for our kids, schools, families, hospitals, veterans, people with disabilities, farmers, and seniors. And we will pass a balanced, equitable budget that does everything we can to protect Minnesotans from Trump’s chaos and Elon Musk’s chainsaw.
We are charged with balancing this budget despite the chaos, corruption, cruelty and uncertainty. We are here to fight for Minnesotans, our institutions, and our future. I can only hope my Republican colleagues join us in that fight, and get real about the threat their president and his billionaire friends pose.”
