Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic Says Two More Bipartisan Measures Pass Senate Wednesday

Senator Nicole Mitchell’s Veterans Justice Bill and Senator Bonnie Westlin’s Bill Governing Electronic Wills Both Approved Unanimously

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic (DFL-Minneapolis) said today the Senate passed two more bipartisan bills; one to help veterans involved in the justice system, and another to help Minnesotans who prepare electronic wills.

Majority Leader Dziedzic said both the veterans justice bill, authored by Sen. Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury), and the bill governing electronic wills, authored by Senator Bonnie Westlin (DFL-Plymouth), passed with unanimous support.

“The Senate today passed two more bipartisan measures today to help Minnesotans – and both passed unanimously,” said Majority Leader Dziedzic.  “Senator Mitchell’s bill will help ensure that veterans are treated fairly as they interact with the justice system, and Senator Westlin’s bill will help modernize and simplify estate planning for Minnesotans who prepare electronic wills.”

Senator Mitchell’s update to the “Veterans’ Restorative Justice Act” helps veterans who can demonstrate a connection between a service-connected injury and the reason they must appear in court. It enables them to choose an alternative path to sentencing before entering a plea.  The measure – backed by the Minnesota County Attorney Association – helps veterans access needed treatments and court alternatives.

Senator Westlin’s “Uniform Electronic Wills Act” will modernize and simplify estate planning by allowing Minnesotans to have their wills witnessed, notarized, and completed electronically.  The measure is backed by Minnesota State Bar Association.
