ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Monday, the House and Senate passed a bill to remove adult undocumented immigrants from MinnesotaCare, repealing insurance coverage passed into law in 2023.
The Senate POCI Caucus issued the following statement:
“Removing undocumented Minnesotans from MinnesotaCare is wrong in every way imaginable: financially, functionally, practically and morally. Throughout this session, legislators have been reminded that providing this insurance is supported by every single part of the healthcare system, from nurses to actuaries, surgeons to CEOs. Republicans don’t care. They are hellbent on bringing the cruelty agenda of Donald Trump, Tom Homan and Stephen Miller to St. Paul.
This is evil disguised as economics. Their belief that this vote benefits them politically is an insult to Minnesotans, who are smarter and much more compassionate than Republicans think. Let’s call this what it is: cruel, racist, and deadly. Republicans would rather let people suffer and die than allow undocumented Minnesotans to access the basic care every human being deserves. They’ve chosen fear and hate over health and humanity.
Republicans cared so much about this issue they sacrificed all other negotiating principles to secure this vote, which will stand as their only accomplishment of this session: kicking 16,000 people off insurance, knowing that those people will lose access to medication or treatment that is keeping them alive. Some of them will die, and the Republicans who forced this issue over all others will have to live with that choice, and should answer for it.
The Senate POCI Caucus will not give up the fight for equitable treatment and human rights for all Minnesotans – not after this vote, and not ever.”
