Senator Aric Putnam Wins ‘Service to Agriculture’ Award for Work in 2023 to Enhance Livelihood of Minnesota Farmers and Rural Communities
Senator Recognized at MN Farmers Union 2023 Annual Convention
St. Paul, MN – Senator Aric Putnam (DFL-St. Cloud) received the 2023 Service to Agriculture Award from the Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) for his work to enhance the livelihood and well-being of family farmers, ranchers, and rural communities across Minnesota.
“I am honored to receive the Minnesota Farmers Union Service to Agriculture Award,” said Senator Aric Putnam. “Farming and agriculture are central to Minnesota’s economy and way of life, and I am proud of the bipartisan work we did in the Senate Agriculture Committee. This past session, we listened to voices of Minnesota farmers and created legislation by having conversations with farmers. I will continue to share those voices with my committee next session.”
Senator Putnam, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, formally received the award at MFU’s annual convention on Saturday in Minneapolis. The organization cited not only his work at the State Capitol as Agriculture Committee Chair, but also his on-the-ground work across Minnesota, where he has visited farms and agriculture facilities, and held farm listening more than 40 times this year.
“Chair Putnam has shown that he understands the needs of Minnesota’s family farmers and rural communities,” said Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) President Gary Wertish. “He has visited family farmers across the state, listened to their concerns, and advocated for policies that will expand economic opportunities for farmers and community members.”
The group cited Chair Putnam’s leadership in many areas, including:
- establishing a grain indemnity fund to protect farmers in the event of an elevator failure,
- investing in local and regional meat processing,
- supporting beginning and emerging farmers,
- expanding farm-to-school programs,
- funding rural broadband,
- helping to secure a reauthorization and expansion of the Beginning Farmer Tax Credit,
- pioneering a new green fertilizer production incentive, and
- championing new investments in affordable childcare
