Senator Bobby Joe Champion strongly Condemns Trump Action to Remove Protected Status from Minnesota’s Somali Community

Says He Stands With Community to Fight Unlawful, Dangerous, Divisive Order

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senator Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis) strongly condemned President’s Trump’s recent  announcement that he is removing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Somali individuals who are in the U.S. due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Somalia.

“President Trump’s announcement is not only a gratituitous attack on Minnesota’s Somali Community, it’s unlawful, dangerous and divisive at the very time we need to be standing up for each other and working together on the problems facing our state and our country.” said Senator Champion.  “The President’s order would only further punish people in Minnesota who have already been the victims of political violence, conflict, and famine.  These are our friends, our neighbors and fellow Minnesotans and I’ve seen firsthand how they are an asset to our state.  They have built lives, built families, and built businesses that have helped our state thrive.  I strongly condemn the Presidents effort to end TPS for Somalis in Minnesota.”

TPS is a federal program that allows migrants from unstable countries to live and work legally in the United States.  The TPS designation for Somalia runs through March 17, 2026.
