Senator Bonnie Westlin Leads Bill to Rename Highway 169 Bridge in Plymouth and New Hope in Honor of Michael Gau

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Today, the Minnesota Senate passed House File 3437, a bill designating the Highway 169 and Rockford Road bridge, spanning Plymouth and New Hope, the Michael Gau Memorial Bridge. Authored by Senator Bonnie Westlin (DFL – Plymouth), this bill memorializes Mr. Gau, who was struck by a vehicle in a work zone accident while the new bridge was under construction.

Michael Gau was a 23-year veteran of the Belle Plaine Fire Department and a 14-year MnDOT Highway Department employee. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, his MnDOT coworkers, and Belle Plaine Fire Department colleagues.

“Mr. Gau was a dedicated and beloved MnDOT employee of 14 years. He lived his values and cared deeply about his community and his State.” said Senator Westlin. “Mr. Gau was an incredible person who gave so much back to his community in Belle Plaine as a firefighter of 23 years. Notably, Mr. Gau was awarded Belle Plaine firefighter of the year in 2021. Memorializing Mr. Gau through this bridge is one way we can celebrate his legacy of dedication to Minnesota and public service.

The bill passed the Senate on a vote of 65-2. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk.
