St. Anthony Village High School Student’s Idea Becomes Legislation
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Yesterday, March 24, 2026, Senator Bonnie Westlin (DFL – Plymouth) presented Senate File 4734 in the Senate Elections Committee. The bill, brought to the legislature by St. Anthony Village High School Student Maitreya Reeder, allows the Secretary of State, county auditors, municipal clerks, and school district clerks to hold competitions to create new designs for the “I VOTED” sticker. Designs may include images, but can only include the words “I VOTED.”
In an effort to increase voter participation and engagement, several states and municipalities have enacted laws similar to this bill, with some designs going viral online.
“Voting is one of the most powerful things we can do as citizens,” said. Sen. Westlin. “An ‘I Voted’ sticker design competition is a fun, creative way to get our community fired up about the polls.”
“We should always be looking for ways to increase civic engagement, even as Minnesota often tops the list for voter participation. More voters make for a better representative democracy. Whether you’re an artist, a doodler, or just someone who loves a good sticker, this is your chance to put your stamp on our democracy.”
Maitreya Reeder, who originally brought this idea to the legislature, testified before the Senate Elections Committee yesterday. Senate File 4734 was laid over for possible inclusion in a future omnibus bill. You can view the entire bill presentation here.
