Senator Clausen informs area residents about airport road work and closures

St. Paul, Minn.— Senator Greg Clausen (DFL-Apple Valley) wants area residents to plan for major road work around the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport starting in April and going through October 2020. Motorists should plan ahead and allow plenty of additional time to reach their destination, especially those driving to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This includes those using shuttles, rideshares, and taxis.

Specific projects that will affect traffic include:

  • Eastbound Hwy. 5 will be closed from April until August. Westbound Hwy. 5 will be closed from August until October.
  • Bridges and ramps to and from Westbound Highway 5 where Hwy. 62/55 crosses will be closed for the month of July. Eastbound Hwy. 62/55 to westbound Hwy. 5 ramp will remain open.
  • Eastbound 1-494 will have weekend closures between the Minnesota River Bridge in Mendota Heights and 3rd Avenue in South St. Paul.
  • The I-35/I-494 Interchange and surrounding area will be under construction from April through October, resulting in lane restrictions and closures.

“This summer, traveling to and around the airport could be challenging,” Sen. Clausen said. “Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you are planning to use any of the routes mentioned above. These closures and detours will add time to your drive, especially during peak travel times.”

For maps and the most up to date information, go to The Minnesota Department of Transportation provides information about closures, detour routes, and other information for planning your drive to and from the airport.
