Senator Doron Clark Votes to Pass Comprehensive Gun Violence Prevention Package

Senate File 4067 now heads to the Minnesota House for their consideration

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Today, the Minnesota Senate passed Senate File 4067. The bill contains over a dozen proposals to address gun violence in Minnesota – focusing on reducing the lethality of guns on Minnesota’s streets, keeping students safe in school, and strengthening mental health support for Minnesotans.

Contained within the legislation are the following provisions:

  • Assault weapons ban at point of sale
  • A ban on large capacity magazines over 17 rounds
  • $20 million in school safety aid for every school in Minnesota
  • Creating an Extreme Risk Protection Order public awareness campaign
  • Funding for the Violence Prevention Project to inform gun violence prevention
  • $2.7 million in school-linked behavioral health grants to support early intervention
  • Helping schools to establish anonymous threat reporting systems
  • A ban on binary triggers, which increase the rate of fire
  • Banning untraceable “ghost guns”
  • Limiting circumstances in which firearms are permitted on school property

Senator Doron Clark (DFL-Minneapolis) voted in favor of the package, and issued this statement following its passage:

“Last year, our neighbors in South Minneapolis had their lives turned upside down by gun violence. The image of the mom running toward Annunciation haunts me, and should lead everyone to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ Our politicians cannot continue to drag their feet. We can and must address gun violence, and I’m proud to say that we’re moving our feet with real solutions that will save lives. I am proud to vote ‘Yes’ today, because no other family should have to go through what the families of Annunciation have had to endure.”

The bill now heads to the House, after the Senate voted 34-33 to pass the package.
