ST. PAUL, Minn. — Senator Erin Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley) releases the following statement:
“Yesterday, our country witnessed two deadly shootings on school grounds. One was an act of shocking violence that killed a national political figure; the other left two students wounded and a third, the alleged shooter, dead.
The US stands alone in our horrifying reality. I want to live in a country where gun violence is not the leading cause of death for children; where middle schoolers are not arrested for possession of firearms; where we do not allow weapons of war to devastate our communities. This is not a fantasy — other nations have achieved this and more.
I am fighting for gun violence prevention measures because no one should be shot in our streets, in our schools, in their homes, or praying in a house of worship. I believe proven gun control measures, like a ban on assault weapons, can stop the kind of death and suffering we have seen this summer. The DFL has passed evidence-based gun control measures that have saved lives; I will continue this fight. Minnesota must ban assault weapons, and Congress must follow.”
