Senator Grant Hauschild Joins Day Without Childcare Rally in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown) joined Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, advocates, community members and other legislators Monday in St. Paul to highlight “A Day Without Childcare”, a statewide event highlighting the urgent issues facing childcare access and affordability in Minnesota.

“As the father of young children, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges surrounding childcare in Minnesota, with parents, providers, communities, and businesses struggling to support this critical industry,” said Sen. Hauschild. “That’s why I’m working every day on policies that seek to lower costs for families and increase state support for our childcare workforce and providers.”

Sen. Hauschild has released a slew of proposals to address childcare costs and access. One bill allows for tax credits and savings plans to cover childcare expenses. Other proposals include allowing providers to exclude some of their own children from state limits, creating variances for some regulations, and property tax relief for eligible childcare facilities. Sen. Hauschild also has a proposal for Nannies to be hired by duel families.

Hauschild’s top priority is his Great Start Childcare Affordability bill which would support the goal that no family spend more than 7% of their income on childcare as recommended by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services.

Any efforts to address childcare will be compounded by federal action with President Trump and Elon Musk calling for steep funding cuts.

“The proposed federal funding cuts and uncertainty from Washington D.C. will only make this a bigger challenge for us here in Minnesota. While I’ve introduced several childcare proposals, this uncertainty will make it difficult for us to address this challenge. I will continue to work with my colleague to make progress on childcare costs, and I hope our federal partners will join us in this effort,” added Hauschild.
