(SILVER BAY, Minn.) — A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday marking the start of a $15.5 million water infrastructure project to upgrade Silver Bay’s water treatment facility and build a new booster station.
The project, which received funding through a combination of federal and state sources including the Public Facilities Authority and the Water Infrastructure Funding program, is essential to supporting the critical infrastructure needs of Silver Bay residents, said Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown).
“This project is a major step forward in ensuring Silver Bay residents have the modern, foundational water infrastructure they need to have safe, clean, and dependable water,” said Sen. Hauschild. “The state and federal funding for this project also offsets the costs our local governments face in essential but expensive infrastructure upgrades, without passing the burden to local ratepayers. This is a win-win.”
This is only the latest Silver Bay-area project that Senator Hauschild has helped secure state funding for. In 2024, Sen. Hauschild authored the Minerals Article included in that year’s tax bill, which included $6 million in funding for infrastructure, water, sewer, and broadband replacement in Silver Bay. In 2023, he authored and secured legislative approval through the 2023 Tax Omnibus Bill providing $8 million in gap funding to the Lake Superior School District for critical renovations of William Kelley High School, which concluded in November of 2024.
