Senator Hauschild Advocates for Sales Tax Exemptions for Lake Superior School District Improvements

Bill would lower costs and help provide financial stability at time of rising construction costs

[SAINT PAUL, MN] Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown) presented legislation in the Senate Taxes Committee Wednesday to lower costs for Lake Superior School District as they make much-needed improvements to a number of district facilities. The bill, SF 3753, provides a sales tax exemption for construction materials and equipment related to the improvements.

“The Lake Superior School District is in the process of making major, necessary improvements to facilities that will ensure our students are getting a world-class education in world-class facilities, but the high costs of inflation have made it more expensive than expected,” said Senator Hauschild. “This legislation will help the district get back on track financially by reducing the cost of their construction needs and ensure that they are able to complete these projects without worrying about incurring other costs.”

Lake Superior School District is in the process of making improvements to Minnehaha Elementary School, William Kelly School, Two Harbors High School, the Two Harbors Bus Garage and Silver Bay Bus Garage. The total cost of construction materials for the project is approximately $19.2 million. SF 3753 would provide a refund of approximately $1.32 million for these costs to the District in 2026.

Senator Grant Hauschild represents Senate District 3 – the Arrowhead, Iron Range, and Northland. He is vice chair of the Labor Committee, and serves on the Education Policy Committee, Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee, and Taxes Committee.
