Senator Hauschild Signs Civility Pledge

Hauschild Serves as Senate Co-Chair of Minnesota Civility Caucus

(DULUTH, MN) – Joining a growing bipartisan list of legislators and everyday Minnesotans, Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL-Hermantown) Tuesdaysigned a pledge affirming a commitment rejecting political violence and fostering civic trust.

“We may disagree with one another about policy or positions, but we should all agree that there is no place for political violence in our state or country,” said Sen. Hauschild. “We need to ground our politics in mutual respect, and with earnest efforts to find common ground. I firmly believe in this work, and I hope more of my colleagues will sign onto this effort.”

The pledge signed Tuesday by Sen. Hauschild was organized by the nonpartisan civic advocacy group Majority in the Middle. Signers of the pledge commit to and affirm four key pillars:

  • Engage peacefully with my fellow Minnesotans.
  • Work in good faith to resolve disputes.
  • Reject political violence in all forms, and stand firmly against rhetoric that incites that violence.
  • Embrace the hard but necessary work of finding common ground.

“Politics can be messy, but it’s gotten very ugly in recent years. We’ve seen too clearly what that can lead to. It’s essential for our democracy that we recommit to a politics that is civil, respectful, that brings the temperature down, instead of inflaming it” added Sen. Hauschild.

In addition to signing Tuesday’s pledge, Sen. Hauschild also serves as the co-chair of the Legislature’s Civility Caucus, a bipartisan, bicameral caucus that is committed to building trust and understanding between parties. He was also one of the founding members of the Senate Blue Dog Coalition, whose membership is dedicated to bridging divides and bringing bipartisan solutions that serve all Minnesotans, regardless of political affiliation.
