ST. PAUL, Minn. — This evening, the House Ways and Means Committee passed Senate File 856 – Senator Heather Gustafson’s (DFL-Vadnais Heights) proposal to create a statewide Office of Inspector General. The bill now moves to the House Floor and one step closer to becoming law.
Passed by the Senate on an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 60-7 in 2025, the bill would create an independent Office of Inspector General to oversee use of state tax dollars, ensuring they are allocated and used as intended.
“I am pleased to see further cooperation and movement on this important legislation,” said Senator Gustafson. “The Senate passed my bill overwhelmingly because of the honest bipartisan work that went into it. This isn’t the end-all-be-all of fraud prevention, but our proposal is the most significant, meaningful step towards our shared goal of protecting state tax dollars to date. I commend the House authors for their work, I and look forward to continued progress in the future.”
