Senator Heather Gustafson Begins Legislative Session Focused on Local Partnerships, Property Tax Relief, Public Safety, and Government Accountability

ST. PAUL, Minn. — As the 2026 legislative session begins, Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL–Vadnais Heights) is highlighting her continued commitment to working closely with local communities, lowering costs for families, strengthening public safety, and advancing strong oversight of taxpayer dollars.

“Meeting with our city leaders and residents is one of the most important parts of my job,” said Senator Gustafson. “Over the past several weeks, I’ve met with city councils and local leaders throughout Senate District 36 – in order to strengthen partnerships and hear priorities directly from residents. These conversations ensure that the work we do at the Capitol reflects the real needs of our communities.”

This session, Senator Gustafson is prioritizing efforts to deliver meaningful property tax relief for homeowners and seniors while advancing legislation that supports local public safety needs, including continued investments to help communities recruit, retain, and equip first responders.

Senator Gustafson has also responded to community concerns about recent federal immigration enforcement actions, noting that aggressive tactics can create fear and disrupt families and neighborhoods.

“Enforcement actions must respect constitutional protections and basic human dignity,” said Senator Gustafson. “Policies that create fear in our communities ultimately make everyone less safe.”

In addition, Senator Gustafson is continuing her work to strengthen accountability and prevent fraud through her legislation to establish a statewide independent Office of Inspector General (OIG).

“Minnesotans deserve confidence that their tax dollars are protected,” said Senator Gustafson. “My bill to establish an independent Office of Inspector General will provide additional oversight, prevent fraud before it happens, and ensure public resources are used as intended. Last year, the Senate passed our legislation with strong bipartisan support, and the House is expected to take it up this session.”

Senator Gustafson emphasized that her focus remains on delivering practical results that support families, strengthen communities, and build trust in government.

“I will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle and with our local partners to deliver solutions that make life more affordable, keep our communities safe, and ensure the government works responsibly for the people we serve.”
