(ST. PAUL, Minn.) – In a letter sent Thursday, State Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL-Vadnais Heights) and over 300 residents of Senate District 36 called on Congressman Tom Emmer to reject proposed federal action “cutting $880 billion in public programs that will strip essential resources from the very people who rely on them most.”
“The sweeping budget cuts being proposed in Washington threaten the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans and undermine the economic stability of our state,” said Sen. Gustafson. “That’s why I asked the members of our community to join me on this letter, and to express to Congressman Emmer the importance of fighting for our communities, not against them.”
While Congressman Emmer has already voted in support of a February 25 budget resolution, the final budget must still be negotiated between the House and the Senate. As the House Majority Whip, the third most powerful member of the Republican Majority in Congress, Congressman Emmer is well-positioned to influence these negotiations. Thursday’s letter urges him to use this influence “to put your constituents and all Minnesotans first by opposing these reckless funding cuts.”
