Senator Isaacson opposes SF 2 which will hurt Minnesota schools and students

On February 18, the Minnesota Senate passed SF 2 to remove a Governor’s ability to order school closures under the peacetime emergency authority provided in Minnesota law. After voting against SF 2, Senator Jason Isaacson released the following statement:

“SF 2 is opposed by Education Minnesota. SF 2 is opposed by the Minnesota School Boards Association. SF2 is opposed by the Minnesota Rural Education Association, the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, and the Association of Metro School Districts. The legislature holds public debate and hears testimony to better understand the will of the people,” said Senator Jason Isaacson. “Our educational leaders and the exact groups Senate Republicans claim to empower with this bill are telling us it is bad policy and is irresponsible.”

“This proves that SF 2 is not about listening to our communities, making our schools better, keeping our kids safe, closing the achievement gap, protecting school staff, or providing necessary resources to help combat COVID-19 – this bill is simply a partisan power grab and attack on Governor Walz. I am disappointed in my colleagues for using this important time to play political games instead of working to find bipartisan solutions to reopen our schools safely. We can and should do better.”
