(ST. PAUL, MN.) – After the conclusion of Wednesday’s hearing of the Senate Gun Violence Prevention Working Group, co-chairs Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park) and Senator Zaynab Mohamed (DFL-Minneapolis) released the following statement:
“After two days of hearings, we are disappointed that there was a lack of consensus on the proposals that were brought forward in our working group on gun violence prevention.
“Today’s discussion makes it clear that there is major disagreement on what steps are necessary to protect our children and our communities. However, we remain fully committed to working with our colleagues in the legislature on both sides of the aisle to move forward on proposals that will save lives and protect Minnesotans.
“We believe that we cannot solve the problem of gun violence without including ways to address the prevalence, accessibility and lethality of the firearms themselves. While we need to find ways to reduce individuals’ ability and desire to commit violent acts, we must also address the instruments of that violence: guns themselves.
“Most of all, we want to thank all of the parents, medical professionals, advocates, and members of the public who shared their powerful testimony with us on Monday. Their courage and dedication should inspire all of us at the legislature to pass laws that take meaningful action in our state on gun violence.”
