Senator Latz responds to the officer involved shooting of Daunte Wright

On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Daunt Wright was fatally shot by Brooklyn Center police. Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park), DFL Lead on the Judiciary Committee, released the following statement about this tragic incident:

“Yesterday we lost yet another Black man at the hands of a police officer. This tragic incident highlights the urgency of addressing the need for reform in the area of police standards, training, and accountability.

“The Senate Republicans have ignored the need all session – failing to have even one hearing this Spring in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee on the topic. We cannot seriously address this critical public policy topic without diligent consideration and evaluation of the proposals. The Republican dilatory tactics – whether based upon ignorance or opposition – do not advance the cause of public safety or human rights for all of our communities.

“I call upon Chair Warren Limmer and the Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee to have a hearing and give voice to all interested in this important matter before the topic is engaged in conference committee.”
