ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Wednesday, February 25, Congressional House Republicans passed a budget resolution to cut $2 trillion in federal programs, including $880 billion in the areas that have jurisdiction over Medicaid – known as Medical Assistance in Minnesota. All four of Minnesota’s Republican Congressional Representatives voted for the resolution.
In Minnesota, over 1.4 million people are covered through Medicaid and the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP), including nearly 83,000 residents of Congressional District 1. These programs help protect the most vulnerable Minnesotans.
In response to this action, Minnesota State Senator Liz Boldon (DFL-Rochester), released the following statement.
“Shameful. At a time when we should be bolstering our social safety nets and protecting the most vulnerable people in our communities, Congressional Republicans are doing the exact opposite and advancing their chaos agenda,” said Senator Boldon. “No doubt – these cuts are another example of the cruelty of this administration. Their priorities are clear. They are focused on giving tax cuts to the wealthiest top 1% – the same billionaires who are using the federal government to corruptly line their own pockets, while hardworking Minnesotans are left out to dry. Instead of representing the hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans that rely on and deserve the care and services these programs provide, Representative Finstad and his GOP colleagues chose to bend the knee to Trump and unelected billionaire, Elon Musk.”
“In Minnesota, we care about our neighbors, and stand up for them. We shovel the sidewalk for them. We bring in their mail. We offer each other a carpool to school or work. Gutting the programs that help our neighbors afford healthcare is a cruel slap in the face to seniors, children and people with disabilities in Southern Minnesota. Congressional Republicans are only making it harder for Minnesota to build a state budget, and making it harder for Minnesotans to afford their everyday lives. I call on our Republican colleagues to stand up against these disastrous cuts.”
