ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Monday, March 10, the Trump Administration announced its termination of $1 billion in nationwide funding for food banks and farm-to-school programs. These programs give farmers better access to local markets, and provide Minnesota’s children with fresh, locally-sourced, healthy meals.
Minnesota was set to receive significant support to address our growing food insecurity crisis, including:
- $9,226,348 for school food purchasing
- $4,045,518 for child care institution food purchasing
- $4,732,009 through the Local Food Purchasing Assistance (LFPA) program
In response to this decision from the Trump Administration, Senator Liz Boldon (DFL-Rochester) released the following statement:
“Like their proposed gutting of Medicaid and SNAP benefits, this is yet another example of the Trump Administration’s chaos, cruelty, and corruption. Let’s be very clear, this is an attack on students, farmers and working-class families. At a time when food bank visits are at an all-time high, Donald Trump and his top campaign donor, Elon Musk are terminating crucial funding for the most vulnerable Minnesotans in order to pay for tax cuts for the ultra wealthy – pulling the rug out from folks struggling to make ends meet.
“This month, local Rochester food banks testified in our Health and Human Services Committee about the increased demand for accessible and affordable groceries. Food insecurity is a massive problem that Trump should be addressing head on. Instead, he’s making the problem worse, and he’s demonstrating his contempt for working-class Americans. Donald Trump has no mandate to destroy our social safety nets. My Republican colleagues and our elected representatives in Congress need to stand up for their constituents, against the Trump Administration’s draconian cuts.”
