ST. PAUL, Minn. — Today, September 25, the Senate’s Select Committee on Federal Impacts on Minnesotans and Economic Stability visited the Channel One Regional Food Bank in Rochester to delve into the issue of food security and federal cuts to SNAP benefits for Minnesotans. Members toured the food bank and food shelf, then held a roundtable discussion with representatives from Rochester Public Schools, Zumbro Lutheran Church and Channel One to learn more about local needs.
In response, Senator Liz Boldon (DFL-Rochester) issued the following statement:
“I appreciate the Select Committee’s visit to Rochester to bring together local advocates and experts in the food security field. The demand for healthy food options has stretched our regional network beyond its limits. When the Trump administration’s budget kicks tens of thousands of Minnesotans off the SNAP program, families will go hungry, property taxes will spike, grocery stores will close, and the line at food shelves will grow even longer than they are now.
“Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress, by choice, are turning something that was already a crisis into a full blown emergency, to pay for tax cuts for their ultra-wealthy donors. It’s corrupt, chaotic, and cruel to Minnesotans who are already struggling. By making these cuts, Trump and Republicans are throwing states, counties, cities, and our most vulnerable neighbors into danger. My DFL colleagues and I are taking these issues seriously, and I look forward to the important work we have ahead of us to center Minnesotans and their needs.”
The Senate’s Select Committee on Federal Impacts on Minnesotans and Economic Stability will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, October 1.
