Senator Matt Klein (DFL – Mendota Heights) announces the introduction of Senate File 757, a bill to legalize and regulate sports wagering in Minnesota. After reaching an unprecedented all-party agreement at the close of the 2024 legislative session, Senator Klein is ready bring this bill across the finish line in 2025.
“My bipartisan bill unites key stakeholders, including all eleven tribal nations, two commercial horse racing tracks, professional sports teams, bipartisan legislators, and most important public support.” Said Senator Klein. “We are ready to legalize and regulate sports wagering in a responsible manner in Minnesota.”
Key provisions in the Senator Klein’s sports wagering bill include:
- Revenues: Revenues directed to youth sports and activities, support for local charities, and attracting local sporting events
- Tribal Licenses: Maintains tribal ownership of sports wagering licenses. Tribes have successfully managed legal wagering for years and can take this next step responsibly.
- Consumer Protections: Most rigorous protections against problem and underage gaming in the nation, including funding for identifying at risk individuals, banning push notifications on apps, cool down periods after deposits, a ban on college propositional bets, prohibiting ads that target minors or problem gamblers, and more.
“Minnesotans are already wagering on sports in significant numbers, but without legal options, and an unregulated market has flourished,” said Senator Klein. “This bill will ensure consumer protections, age verification, and responsible gaming initiatives while generating revenue to benefit our communities.”
Senate File 757 will be officially introduced during floor session on January 30, 2025, and referred to the Committee on State and Local Government.
