Senator Matt Klein, M.D. thanks Minnesota Medical Assoc. for taking tough stance on gun violence

Senator Matt Klein (DFL-Mendota Heights) is one of only two physicians in the Minnesota Legislature. He is also a member of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), which this week announced a tougher stance on preventing gun violence. In response, Sen. Klein authored a letter thanking MMA for its leadership. That letter is below.

Dear Drs. Schoephoerster and Rice:

I write to congratulate you on the brave and necessary step by the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) to advocate on gun violence.

As a MMA member, practicing hospital physician at Hennepin County Medical Center, and state senator, I share your sense of urgency that this devastating public health threat must be answered.

The current mortality and morbidity associated with gun violence is reminiscent of automobile deaths fifty years ago in America. We have been able to decrease the risks of automobile use dramatically through studied interventions such as seatbelt use, modifications in automobile design, and traffic modifications. There is every reason to expect that a similar thoughtful and targeted approach to gun violence could have the same impact.

That is why I have authored Senate File 2726, which would allow the Minnesota Department of Health to gather de-identified data on gun ownership in Minnesota for the purpose of public health evaluation. I offer the bill for your consideration and would be grateful for your public support.

Thank you again for your courage and leadership.
