Senator Nicole Mitchell Joins Somali-American Legislative Caucus and Local Community Members to Raise Alarm over Catastrophic Flooding in Somalia

SAINT PAUL, MN – On Monday, the Somali-American Legislative Caucus held a press conference to express concern for the health and safety of family and friends in Somalia.

Senator Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) joined legislators, community leaders, and local elected officials to raise awareness of the 2 million people displaced and 110 people killed by the catastrophic flooding in Somalia. Mitchell issued the following statement regarding the devastating floods.

“I want to express my condolences to people who have lost loved ones or been displaced by this devastating flooding, including the many members of the East African community living here in Minnesota. As members of the community, we hold you in our thoughts and are with you and your families as you recover from this tragedy. As policymakers, we have to examine the root causes of disasters like this one. The continued warming of our planet is leading to increased instances of drought, and more damaging floods when storms hit. What used to be called ‘100 year’ weather events are now regular occurrences, and across the globe, it is people living in already economically disadvantaged countries who are most exposed to the consequences. States have a role to play in fighting climate change. Legislation we passed this year puts us on a path to a cleaner energy future, including the 100 Percent by 2040 that commits to create a carbon-free electrical grid within a generation. Minnesota must continue to find ways to play our role as a global partner, and to support a sustainable existence for people around the world.”

Senator Nicole Mitchell represents Senate District 47 which includes Maplewood and Woodbury. She is vice chair of the State and Local Government and Veterans Committee, and serves on the Elections Committee, Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate Committee, and the Human Services Committee.
