ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Monday, Senator Rob Kupec’s (DFL-Moorhead) Grain Indemnity Bill was heard and passed in the Agriculture Committee. This bill would appropriate $15 million to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for the establishment of a rainy-day fund for farmers if a grain elevator failure were to occur. In response, Senator Rob Kupec (DFL-Moorhead), released the following statement:
“Minnesota’s farmers are the backbone of this state. Yet according to a report from the attorney general’s office, we have some of the worst protections for farmers in the upper Midwest. We’ve seen a number of grain elevators over the years go under, leaving farmers in compromising and even devastating financial situations. My bill to invest $15 million in the agriculture fund would create a blanket of security for both grain elevators and farmers alike.”
SF 2218 passed the Agriculture, Broadband, and Rural Development Committee and is headed to the State and Local Government Committee.
