Senator Ron Latz calls on Senator Warren Limmer to hold criminal justice and police reform hearings before the special session

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senator Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, DFL Lead on the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, released the following statement.

“Last Friday, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka spoke on behalf of the Republican caucus on the issues of racial inequality and injustice. I was disheartened and angry that he essentially said the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee will not take action in the lead up to the special session at the end of this week.” said Sen. Latz.

“However, Democratic Senators have been asking for hearings on police reform legislation for years and Committee Chair Senator Warren Limmer has refused to hear most of those proposed solutions. While the House of Representatives held public hearings on many of these bills in the past two years, the Senate Majority failed to prioritize the “justice” part of the criminal justice proposals, largely leaving unaddressed issues of institutionalized racism and police-community conflict.”

“Among the bills that Senator Limmer has refused to hear are: expanding the POST Board membership to incorporate more public membership and racial diversity, investing serious state dollars for peace officer training, and establishing a peace officer task force for the purposes of reviewing, assessing, and making recommendations for reforms to the laws, rules, contracts, and policies that govern employer-employee relationships between political subdivisions and peace officers.

“We cannot wait until next year to pass meaningful police reform and criminal justice legislation. We can make informed decisions now. I call upon Chair Limmer to schedule committee hearings this week to hear serious criminal justice and police reform proposals including those coming from the House in preparation for a special session. We have time to do the work and change the laws to bend the arc of history towards justice.”
