(ST. PAUL, Minn) – According to recent reporting by Fox 9, data shows that the usage of Minnesota’s Extreme Risk Protection Orders to prevent acts of gun violence is on pace to double from last year’s use. In total, the report shows that 401 cases have been filed through November 15 of this year since the law took effect in 2024.
In response Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park), who was the chief author of the legislation in the Senate released the following statement:
“We passed legislation creating extreme risk protection orders because we knew it could be a valuable tool to prevent tragedies in homes and communities throughout the state. I’m grateful to see that our partners in law enforcement and ordinary Minnesotans are utilizing this option to help keep themselves or families safe from gun violence, and I hope it continues to be utilized to prevent gun violence. There is more to be done to prevent gun violence in Minnesota, but the data is clear that extreme risk protection orders have been a valuable asset to keeping people safe.”
