[ST. PAUL, Minn.] – Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park) released the statement below recognizing Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945.
“It is ironic that today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. While the road to the Holocaust was long, what we have experienced in Minneapolis in the last several months is similar to Germany in the 1930s. The difference is that a broad swath of Minnesotans has stood up and pushed back, at great risk to themselves.
“While our battle here and across the country is far from over, all it takes for tyranny to prevail is for good people to remain silent. We have not remained silent. We will oppose encroaching tyranny with everything we’ve got.
“Two Minnesotans have recently paid that price with their lives. They will stand in history as martyrs to our way of life, the American experiment perpetuated — and defended when threatened.
“Today – Holocaust Remembrance Day – is a reminder of where lawless militarization of government authority and broad demonization of peoples can lead. The Nazi Genocide killed 6 million Jews, but also targeted Jehovah’s Witnesses, Roma/Sinti, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and many others.
“In recent weeks, Minnesota has stood up and definitively declared “Never Again.”
