Senator Sandy Pappas Condemns US DOJ Lawsuit Attacking Minnesota Dream Act

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Wednesday, June 25, the US Department of Justice filed a suit against Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison and the Minnesota’s Office of Higher Education over the Minnesota Dream Act, a 2013 law that makes allows undocumented Minnesota students who attend a Minnesota high school for at least three years and graduate or earn their GED in Minnesota, eligible for in-state tuition rates.

Senator Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) was chief author of the Minnesota Dream Act and releases the following statement:

“My heart breaks that the Trump Administration would spend time and energy attacking this legislation, which has done nothing but good for Minnesota students, colleges and communities. These students grew up in Minnesota, attended Minnesota high schools and studied hard. They were excitedly preparing to attend college, and frequently, they learned about their legal status for the first time in that process.

“This law passed with bipartisan support in 2013 and has faced no opposition in the intervening 12 years. The Minnesota Dream Act boosts colleges’ enrollment and bottom lines; there is no cost to the state; and these students go on to work, pay taxes and raise families in Minnesota communities. This lawsuit is one more shameful part of the Trump Administration’s mission to demonize immigrant communities and force them out of public life. I fiercely oppose this spiteful lawsuit.”
