Today, the Metropolitan Council released the reports of two independent consultants on the proposed routes for the Southwest Light Rail line. Senate Transportation Committee Chair Senator Scott Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis) and House Transportation Committee Chair Representative Frank Hornstein (DFL-Minneapolis) released the following statement on the findings:
“It is good news that the independent consultant hired by the Met Council has found a viable freight route option that may well address shared concerns around safety, community impacts, environmental effects and cost. It is important to appreciate that Southwest LRT has region wide benefits and all communities in the region will share both the costs and benefits.
We look forward to the Met Council, cities, the county and the railroad working together to take a closer look at this idea to provide perspective and more detail. Public input will be crucial through the comment period and community forums that have been scheduled.
We thank Governor Dayton for his leadership that helped ensure all possible options be explored.”
