Senator Scott Dibble Statement on Executive Order Restricting Access and Funding for Gender-Affirming Care

ST. PAUL, MN.  — An executive order signed Tuesday by President Donald Trump attempts to cut federal funding and threatens states with laws to protect those who need gender-affirming care, actions that threaten access to life saving, critical health care for Minnesotans. Senator Scott Dibble vowed to fight federal efforts to attack transgender Minnesotans.

“President Trump’s executive order is his latest attempt to scapegoat and demonize some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and does nothing but threaten the wellbeing, health, and safety of the trans community,” said Sen. Dibble. “His executive order, full of blatant lies, bizarre hyperbole, fear-mongering and hatred is the opposite of the values Minnesotans share. As his actions are challenged in court, I will continue to work with fellow legislators and community members to support our trans community. His hateful efforts will be rejected and will fail. Our community is strong and resilient and will prevail over the attacks of this authoritarian tyrant.”

In Minnesota recently passed legislation protecting those who come to Minnesota, and those already here, from the reach of discriminatory, heinous laws designed to deny vital health care with the stated goal of full erasure of transgender people. Minnesota has also passed laws to require health plans that cover physical or mental health services to also cover medically necessary gender-affirming care.
