Senator Tomassoni Announces Legislative Priorities for 2018 Session: Economy, Environment, and Public Safety are Major Focus

St. Paul, Minn. – State lawmakers returned to Saint Paul today to kick off the 2018 legislative session. Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) began the day by announcing his legislative priorities.

“My goal every session is to do right by the people of northern Minnesota,” said Sen. Tomassoni. “Some of the things I want to take a hard look at this year are federal tax conformity, public works construction projects, repeal of the wild rice sulfate standard, and fixing the MNLARS licensing system.”

In the wake of last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida that took the lives of 17 students and teachers, Sen. Tomassoni says he wants to investigate security protocols at public schools and study ideas to improve student safety.

“We need to find a way to prevent armed, violent people from entering our schools and killing our kids,” said Sen. Tomassoni. “There are no easy answers when tragedy hits, but it’s incumbent upon us as elected officials to try and prevent something like this from ever happening again. I think a good starting point is getting our schools outfitted with metal detectors. After the Red Lake School shooting here in Minnesota, the response was to secure the school with metal detectors and armed guards and require mesh backpacks for students. Metal detectors have been effective at our sports stadiums and our airports. It may be time to equip our schools with high tech security systems.”

The Senate DFL Caucus begins the session with 33 members, just one vote shy of a majority. It remains to be seen whether Lieutenant Governor Michelle Fischbach will retain her seat as Senate President, and what impact it could have on legislation passed this session.
