St. Paul, Minn. – Five conservative members of the United States Supreme Court yesterday issued a decision that harms Minnesotans who work for public sector unions, such as teachers, nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, paramedics, and sanitation workers. The court’s narrow 5-4 decision in the Janus vs. AFSCME lawsuit fundamentally undermines public employees’ ability to collectively advocate for fair compensation, benefits, and working conditions.
“Five Supreme Court Justices decided to further rig our economy in favor of millionaires and big corporations,” said Sen. Lourey in response to the Janus case. “I disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision in the strongest possible terms and stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in Labor. My district provides significant employment opportunities for public teachers, corrections officers, and college instructions, who for decades have joined together to collectively bargain for compensation, benefits, and working conditions. Unions are a hallmark of middle-class prosperity. I will continue to do everything in my power to support hard-working Minnesotans.”
