SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Yesterday, Senator Tou Xiong (DFL – Maplewood) presented Senate File 959 in the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill appropriates $3 million in fiscal year 2025 to fund preliminary design for a grade-separated interchange at the intersection of trunk highways 36 and 120.
Traffic in Washington County has increased more than 20% since the St Croix River Crossing Bridge was built. Washington County has also seen significant population growth, which makes additional traffic inevitable.
This intersection has averaged at least 25 crashes per year, with a history of serious injuries and fatalities. It has the fourth-highest crash cost in Minnesota.
“This interchange is proven to be extremely dangerous for our communities,” said Sen. Xiong. “As the population grows and more Wisconsin commuters travel to Minnesota for work and recreation, we must ensure the safety of everyone on the roads, and we must get this project moving. I will continue working on this funding request at the legislature this year.”
The bill is supported by Ramsey and Washington counties. The bill was laid over for possible inclusion in a committee omnibus bill. You can watch the entire bill presentation here.
