ST. PAUL, Minn. — On June 26, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the State of Minnesota that seeks to strip undocumented Minnesotans from receiving in-state tuition costs under the Prosperity Act of 2013, and the North Star Promise tuition-free program passed in 2023.
In response to the lawsuit, Senator Zaynab Mohamed (DFL-Minneapolis) issues the following statement:
“This lawsuit is another example of an extremist, anti-immigrant agenda that demonizes our neighbors for political gain. The Minnesota Prosperity Act passed with the support of Republicans and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. In the dozen years since it passed, the program has not been controversial – until now, with Donald Trump and Stephen Miller trying to punish states and communities for welcoming immigrant families. The lawsuit is further proof that their mission has never been about a secure border, ‘criminals’ or ‘freeloaders.’ The people utilizing this law have lived in Minnesota for years, worked their way through our schools and are seeking to better their future through higher education. They are model Americans, and only the most xenophobic ideologues can’t see that. I have every confidence in Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office to fight this in court, and see that a smart, widely supported law is upheld.”
