Following the fatal police shooting of 22 year old Amir Locke in Minneapolis, Leader Melisa López Franzen (DFL-Edina) released the following statement:
“It is with a deeply heavy heart that we once again confront the death of a young black man due to a police shooting. The trauma and grief surrounding Amir Locke’s family, loved ones, and community is incomprehensible and an experience known all too well by many communities of color.
We recognize a pattern from the death of Breonna Taylor, and now Amir Locke, that the use of no-knock warrants can have deadly ramifications and needs to be reviewed. Everyone deserves to feel safe, and until Minnesota’s communities of color do too, we still must advocate for public safety policy that protects both law enforcement and citizens.
I extend my sincerest condolences and support to Amir’s family– especially his parents Andre Locke and Karen Wells. I pray you find strength, courage, and support during this time of grief. ”
