Statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy

SAINT PAUL, Minn. –Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) released the following statement after Congressional Republicans passed a budget plan that will make it much harder for Minnesota to balance its budget. Their plan cuts health care, food assistance, and education to pay for trillions of dollars in tax cuts skewed heavily to the already wealthy:

“If Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk, and Minnesota’s four Republican members of Congress get their way, Minnesotans’ tax dollars will flow into the bank accounts of the wealthiest Americans. That would leave hard working people with less as they struggle against Trump’s inflation, job loss, and uncertainty. The GOP budget would be exceptionally harmful to children, the sick, people with disabilities, and those who are already facing down poverty on a daily basis. It would drive up costs for basic needs like food, housing, childcare and health care for working people across Minnesota. I am disgusted.

Every Republican sent to Washington to fight for Minnesota voted for this giveaway to the richest 1 percent, paid for by the rest of us.  It will be exceptionally harmful to our rural health care providers and farmers.  President Trump counts this as a ‘win’ when we know it is a heavy loss for millions of people in Minnesota and across the country.

My GOP legislative colleagues need to get serious about the harm President Trump and his chosen crony are wreaking in Minnesota. I hope this wakes them up to the hard choices ahead, and the need to get serious about a budget that puts Minnesota families first.”
