Statement From Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) released the following statement.

“The budget bill that passed the Senate today is morally bankrupt and economically corrupt. Minnesotans literally cannot afford for it to go into effect. Donald Trump is demanding a permanent, unfunded cost shift from the federal government to household budgets, states, counties. This bill will gut healthcare and food security programs that keep millions of households stable and healthy, including kicking more than 250,000 Minnesotans off Medicaid and 45,000 from SNAP food assistance benefits. Hospitals will struggle to stay open. People will lose good jobs. Minnesotans in our communities will suffer illness and hunger in order to pay for a massive transfer of wealth to the richest people in the history of the world. The bill will also effectively end the clean energy industry in America, and the millions of good jobs that come with it, as a handout to Trump’s backers in the fossil fuel industry.

For people who claim to care about fiscal responsibility, Republicans are choosing to add trillions of dollars to the federal deficit and explode budget stability here at home. This bill is a betrayal of our future, and it is meaningful that it took political bullying, threats and J.D. Vance’s vote just to get it out of the Senate. I commend Senators Smith and Klobuchar for their fierce battle against it. I am calling upon any one of Minnesota’s Republican members in the House to stand up for your constituents, defeat this bill, and start over with something that prioritizes working families instead of the wealthy.”
