Statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL- St. Paul) released the following statement after Governor Walz, state leaders and health care experts held a roundtable to discuss how the Republican budget bill signed into law by President Trump will increase health care costs for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans:

“Donald Trump promised to bring prices down for Americans. But since his first day in office, he has done exactly the opposite. He and the Republicans cut trillions of dollars in taxes for the richest Americans – paid for by cutting health care access for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans.

Just a fraction of the cost of that tax cut could’ve extended a tax credit to keep insurance affordable for millions of Americans, including 90,000 middle-income Minnesotans. But Minnesota Republicans in Congress didn’t care and didn’t act.

Hundreds of thousands more Minnesotans will face double-digit price hikes because Trump has prioritized reckless economic policies, like tariffs, driving up the cost of medication and hospital equipment. He has no interest in curbing runaway costs.

This year, in in Minnesota, the State Legislature invested in a premium security plan to stabilize health insurance premium costs. We will go into the 2026 session with the same priority to help middle-class Minnesotans afford health care. We will make it clear whose decisions are helping Minnesotans and whose decisions aren’t.”
