Statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy on Final Senate Passage of Bill to Make Housing More Affordable for Thousands of Minnesotans

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL. – St. Paul) released the following statement after Senate passage of a final bill to make housing more affordable for tens of thousands of Minnesotans struggling to keep up with housing costs. The measure will now be sent to the governor to be signed into law.

“This legislation is going to keep a lot of Minnesotans in their homes and help catch up on past due bills. That need is something this caucus identified months ago, when we initially passed a rental assistance package, and I’m grateful for the way Chair Lindsey Port (DFL-Burnsville) and her committee fought to get that funding across the line.

The affordability issues created by tariffs and rising gas prices are hitting every household, and many workers and small businesses were financially devastated by Operation Metro Surge. Since last year, we’re seeing the highest housing eviction rates in state history, and fully half of all households are struggling to afford their monthly rents. This budget also invests $100 million to create affordable housing units across the state, and another $14 million specifically for workforce housing in Greater Minnesota.

The rental assistance we passed today exists because of the historic settlement in the case of Geraldine Tyler, a Minneapolis resident who stood up for herself and people like her, whose housing was wrongfully taken through punitive government overreach. This budget is a fitting use of the remainder, as it goes to help Minnesotans whose access to stable housing is threatened by destructive actions by this federal government.”
