SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate President Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis) released the following statement on the devastating shooting deaths of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, the shootings of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette:

“I was devastated by the shocking news this morning that Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark had been shot to death, and I am praying for my fellow Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette who also were shot.

This is an unspeakable tragedy and a shocking loss for our state.

I have worked closely with Speaker Emerita Hortman, as a former member of the House, and with Senator Hoffman as President of the Senate.  I know firsthand that they are dedicated public servants who have been committed to making our state better for every Minnesotan.  I am keeping them and their families close to my heart in this difficult time.”
