The Committee Process Begins for Sen. Clausen’s All-day Kindergarten Bill

Senator Greg Clausen (DFL-Apple Valley) recently enlisted the help of representatives from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Public Schools to highlight the need for All-Day Kindergarten in Minnesota. The Senator was joined by Director of Elementary Education Julie Olson, Deerwood Elementary Principal Miles Haugen and Kathy Bodeker (Deerwood Elementary Kindergarten teacher) in the legislation’s first Senate committee hearing.
“It was great to receive support from our school district,” said Senator Clausen. “All-Day Kindergarten will have a big impact on the future of our state and the ability to improve our children’s reading and math skills. I am grateful to have these folks on my side to articulate the need for this legislation.”
Senator Clausen’s legislation will provide funding to school districts to offer All-Day Kindergarten. Minnesota schools are allowed to offer All-Day Kindergarten but it is not mandated and it is not something for which the state provides funding. Proponents of the legislation believe the investment will be a significant step toward enhancing Minnesota’s commitment to quality education for all children, right at the start of the K-12 system.
“Evidence has shown that kindergartners enrolled in all-day programs perform significantly better on educational achievement measures than their peers,” said Senator Clausen. “As we work to improve the quality of education we offer families in Minnesota, this is a change that I believe will pay huge dividends.”
