Senator Heather Gustafson Bill to Expand Certification Requirements for Interpreters in Classrooms who Support Deaf Students Passes in the Education Policy Committee

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Today, a bill that would expand requirements of certification for ASL interpreters and transliterators who support students with hearing impairments (SF 295) passed unanimously in the Senate Education Policy Committee. In response, Chief Author of the bill Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL-Vadnais Heights) released the following statement:

Senate Education Policy Committee Hears School Discipline Bill

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On Monday, the Education Policy Committee heard testimony on legislation that would create a more holistic approach to school discipline practices (SF 183). Chief author Senator Erin Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley) spoke alongside other testifiers in support of the bill, which places limits on when and how schools may discipline students by excluding them from scheduled recess time and encourages districts to adopt a growth-oriented approach to students who don’t meet educators’ behavioral expectations.
