SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Monday, the Senate Jobs and Economic Development Committee heard Senator Grant Hauschild’s bill (SF 40) to extend unemployment insurance benefits for laid-off workers at Northshore Mining. The committee heard testimony from several stakeholders who spoke in favor of the legislation, including Silver Bay Mayor Wade LeBlanc, Lake County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Janelle Jones, United Steelworkers Local 11 Staff Representative John Arbogast, and Lake County Commissioner & retired Northshore miner Rick Goutermont. After considering testimony and discussing the proposal, the committee passed the bill on a voice vote.
