SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Thursday, the Minnesota Senate passed SF 40 to extend unemployment insurance benefits for laid-off workers at Northshore Mining. The bipartisan bill was chief authored by Sen. Grant Hauschild (DFL – Hermantown) and co-authored by Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic (DFL – Minneapolis), Sen. Rob Farnsworth (R – Hibbing), Sen. Justin Eichorn (R – Grand Rapids), and Sen. Jen McEwen (DFL – Duluth). Following floor debate on the legislation, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 56 yeas to 10 nays.

Senator Grant Hauschild’s Proposal to Extend UI Benefits for Northshore Miners Passes Jobs and Economic Development Committee

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Monday, the Senate Jobs and Economic Development Committee heard Senator Grant Hauschild’s bill (SF 40) to extend unemployment insurance benefits for laid-off workers at Northshore Mining. The committee heard testimony from several stakeholders who spoke in favor of the legislation, including Silver Bay Mayor Wade LeBlanc, Lake County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Janelle Jones, United Steelworkers Local 11 Staff Representative John Arbogast, and Lake County Commissioner & retired Northshore miner Rick Goutermont. After considering testimony and discussing the proposal, the committee passed the bill on a voice vote. The measure is on track to move to the full Senate later this week as a result of Senator Hauschild’s determined work to pass the bill in short order.
