SAINT PAUL, Minn.– In Senate floor action Thursday, Senator Aric Putnam(DFL-St. Cloud) successfully motioned to have his bill to fully eliminate the social security tax for seniors and reform state employee pensions, SF 15, brought out of committee and put on general orders. Senator Putnam released the following statement:
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Thursday, the Minnesota Senate Taxes Committee heard Senator Aric Putnam’s bill (SF 15) to eliminate 100% of the tax on Social Security benefits. It would also reform taxes on pension income of state employees who are not eligible to participate in the social security system, which includes first responders, police officers, firefighters, and some teachers across the state.
Newly introduced legislation would allow seniors collecting social security to also be eligible for unemployment insurance payments if they have been laid off reasons related to COVID-19.
