This week, DFL legislators held a Twitter town hall focused on affordable higher education. The discussion took place during an unusual budget negotiation scenario when Republican House and Senate leaders decided to post and close conference committee reports before a global agreement was met. The last offer Republican legislators made to the higher education budget brought the target down from $185 million to $149 million.
While House and Senate Republicans were playing partisan politics, shutting down debate, and shutting out diverse voices, DFL senators spent time listening to the people most affected by the budget decisions happening in St. Paul. Participants included legislators, students, including Minnesota State students on their 100-mile trek from Mankato State to the Minnesota State Capitol, representatives of state colleges, and special guest, Commissioner of Higher Education Larry Pogemiller. More than 10,700 tweets were seen during the Twitter town hall on Tuesday.
