Location Equity was a big topic of discussion today in the E-12 Education Finance Committee today as rural legislators searched to find an answer to the school funding “donut hole.” See the district impact.
Last year, the Legislature increased per pupil funding for the Twin Cities Metro and Greater Minnesota school districts serving more than 2,000 students. On the opposite end, small-school revenue is reserved for school districts with fewer than 960 students. This left any Greater Minnesota school district with a student count between 961 and 1,999 without the needed investment.
The committee heard five separate bills related to the issue and will consider each for possible inclusion in the future E-12 Finance Omnibus Bill. The committee also moved one of the options to Finance (it is expected to receive a hearing in Taxes as well).
